Born on September 26, 2007, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Gracie was a lifelong resident of her cherished hometown. She was the beloved daughter of Dr. Kevin J. Kavanaugh and Veronica B. Kavanaugh, who survive her, and a bright light in the lives of all who knew her.
From the earliest days of her childhood, Gracie’s presence radiated warmth, kindness, and joy. She was affectionately nicknamed “Sunshine” by her family, a testament to her ever-present smile and the cheerful spirit she carried with her wherever she went. Her gentle heart, combined with her natural kindness and compassion, made her a treasured daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, and friend.
Gracie’s life was filled with purpose and promise. Academically gifted and deeply motivated, she excelled throughout her years in school. She began her education at St. Monica Catholic School, attending from Kindergarten through 8th grade, where she not only thrived in the classroom but also formed many friendships and lifelong memories. She went on to Hackett Catholic Prep High School, where she continued to shine both academically and socially. Never one to limit herself, Gracie had already enrolled in fall classes at Kalamazoo Valley Community College, beginning her journey toward a career in nursing.
Her dream was to dedicate her life to helping others. Inspired by her caring nature, Gracie planned to eventually transfer to a university program to complete her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, with the hope of becoming a nurse who would comfort and heal those in need. Her vision for her future reflected the values she lived every day—selflessness, empathy, and a true love for people.
Outside the classroom, Gracie’s energy and talents extended to athletics and extracurriculars. She played volleyball at St. Monica and later became a spirited member of the cheerleading squad at Hackett, where she encouraged her peers with the same enthusiasm and positivity that defined her personality. She was a young woman of many interests, balancing her studies with sports, friendships, and time with her family.
Family meant everything to Gracie. She treasured vacations and trips, creating unforgettable memories in places such as Washington, D.C., Hammock Beach, Florida, and Nashville, Tennessee, where she attended the Country Music Association Festival—an experience that combined her love of travel with her appreciation for music and adventure. At home, she found joy in the simple, everyday moments with her loyal dogs, Josie and Tucker, who were constant companions by her side.
Gracie’s passing leaves behind a family who loved her deeply and a community that will forever feel the absence of her light. She is preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Dr. John W. Kavanaugh and Ruth E. Kavanaugh, both of Kalamazoo. She is survived by her loving brother, Joseph Asma; her sister, Rachel (Matt) Dallavalle, and their children, Ansley and Hadley; her aunts and uncles, John (Amy) Kavanaugh, Mary (Bill) Bruinsma, and Kathy (Ron) Doud; and her many cousins: Joseph (Sara) Kavanaugh and their children Max, Nate, and Elliott; John (Kaylie) Bruinsma, Vincent (Dana) Bruinsma, Kaili Doud, Daniel Doud, Dr. Monica (Kevin) Hammer, Maria (Amit) Athani, Clare (Jacob) Onderlinde, Kate Kavanaugh, and Anna Kavanaugh. Each of them remembers Gracie for her warmth, her laughter, and the love she so freely gave.
Though her time here was far too brief, Gracie left an indelible mark on everyone she met. She embodied hope, kindness, and joy in a way that will continue to inspire those who knew her. Her light, though gone from this world, will live on in the hearts of her family and friends forever.
